Should you shave a Cavalier?
Most groomers advise against shaving a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The breed has a double-layered silky coat that protects the skin from sun and helps regulate temperature. Shaving can lead to sunburn, patchy regrowth and a coarser coat.
What a Cavalier trim looks like
A tidy trim keeps the natural look: neaten the feet and the hair between the pads, shape the feathering on the legs and tail, and thin the hair under the ears to prevent mats. The ears themselves are usually left long.
Grooming at home
Brush two or three times a week with a slicker brush and a metal comb, paying attention to behind the ears and the armpits. Bathe every four to six weeks with a gentle shampoo, such as our oatmeal shampoo for itchy skin.
When a shorter cut makes sense
A shorter “puppy cut” can help senior dogs, dogs with skin conditions, or dogs that are badly matted. Ask your groomer or vet first, and leave at least an inch of coat.
